Activities Review: Honokohau Harbor & Gentry’s Kona Marina

At Honokohau Harbor and Gentry’s Kona Marina in Kona, Hawaii, there are a number of activities that you can partake in: Sportfishing, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Whale Watching and Sailboat Excursions. No matter what activity you decide to do, or if you can’t choose, you can charter two or three or all of them, and you will have an exciting time on and in the waters of Kona.

Kona is known worldwide as a premier place to go sportfishing. It is consistently in the top five and, most of the time, in the top three Marlin fisheries in the world, and has anglers from all over the world coming for the thrill of pulling in a Marlin. At Honokohau Harbor and Gentry’s Kona Marina, over 20 fishing charters are waiting to take you on a fishing adventure. Other fish in the waters are Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna), Dolphinfish (Mahi Mahi), Ono (Wahoo), A’u Lepe (Pacific Sailfish), Mekajiki (Broadbill Swordfish), Kahala (Amberjack), Kaku (Barracuda), and Ulua ( Giant Trevally). There are also multiple shark species. Trips range from 4-hour half days to 8-hour full days. While there are shared trips, most charters do not offer them.

At the marinas, there are also many dive shops and snorkel cruises. The Hawaiian Islands have some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world and world-class dive boats. Honokohau has over ten dive shops and over ten snorkel shops to choose from. One dive or snorkel you must do is the Giant Manta Rays feeding at night. For snorkelers and scuba divers, Kona has excellent shore diving and snorkeling, too. This means you can see many pretty fish swimming through the reefs right off the beach.

One other major attraction, besides Marlin fishing, is Whale Watching. With many vessels at Honokohau Harbor and Gentry’s Kona Marina, you have many opportunities to see these majestic creatures. Humpbacks come to the waters off the coast from early September to late May. Still, the season really is from December to April, and the best time to come is January and February. This is the best time to see breaching, tail slapping and calves following their mothers. While there are Whale Watching excursions specifically for watching the whales, there are great opportunities to see them when sportfishing, scuba diving and sailing.

Sailing the ocean blue is a great way to see the island and some whales maybe. The Harbor and Marina have many sailboat charter companies. Many of these include snorkeling in crystal clear waters. You can even book a sunset cruise, one of the most romantic things on the island.

Kona is full of activities for you, and Honokohau Harbor and Gentry’s Kona Marina are at the heart of these activities. Most of them are family-friendly but also perfect for couples and singles visiting the islands. You can even combine them. Go whale watching in the morning, and then you can spend a half day chasing giants like Marlin and Ahi or scuba diving or snorkeling. You can even end your day on a sunset sailing charter. The possibilities are endless in Kona at Honokohau Harbor and Gentry’s Kona Marina.
