The Big Island, or the island of Hawaiʻiis aptly named as it is the biggest island in Hawaii. It is also the most popular island in Hawaii for anglers worldwide. With many Big Island fishing charters and some of the trophy fish you have dreamt about reeling in, this island is a fishing destination.
The big draw to the island for anglers is Kailua-Kona or just Kona. Kona is synonymous with big game sportfishing. It is the most popular site for fishing in Hawaii and one of the most popular sites for anglers around the globe. The majority of the sportfishing charters are found here, and Kona fishing charters are amongst the best in the world.
The island also has fishing in Hilo and Waimea. Hilo is a small laid back town on the opposite side of the island from Kona. There are a few Hilo fishing charters here. Not many venture to this side of the island to fish, which is a pity because there are many of the same fish found here as in Kona. Waimea, located just north of Kona, also has a few fishing charters. The Waimea fishing charters usually head down towards Kona.
The fish of the Big Island are some of the fish of every angler’s dreams. Huge Blue, Black and Striped Marlin (A’u), Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi), Wahoo (Ono), and more can be found in the deep waters just off the shore from Kona and Hilo. Other fish like Sailfish (A’ uleppe) and Moonfish (Opa) are also found in these waters. Most of these fish will give you a reel battle as you try to land them.
Many bottom feeders are found on the reefs. Fish like Pink Snapper (Opakapaka), Long-Tail Snapper (Onaga), Ruby Snapper (Ehu), Hawaiian Grouper (Hapu’upu’u), and Hogfish (A’awa) make the Hawaiian reefs home. Other reef fish include Barracuda (Kaku), Bluefin Trevally (Omilu), Amberjack (Kahala) and more.
The Big Island is known for its variety of fish, its excellent fishing and many professional fishing charters with knowledgeable and experienced captains. If you are an angler, you really must plan a vacation here. You will not regret it!
