St. Croix is the largest of all three Saints, with a whopping 82 square miles of history and culture at your disposal. While visiting St. Croix, there are two towns that are a must for your to-do list: Christiansted and Frederiksted, also known as the Twin Cities. Christiansted, founded in 1734, was once the Danish West Indies capital and is now a National Historic Site. Get lost in the shop filled streets and alleys, where you can purchase the finest French fragrances, china, crystal, clothing and jewelry; visit Buck Island and prepare to submerge yourself at one of the top diving spots in the entire world; take a short trip west along the island’s North Shore and discover the Salt River, where Columbus landed in 1493. Frederikstead also has an amazing variety of shops and dining. During the day, visit the vast tropical rain forest along Creque Dam Road, with over 15 miles of tropical foliage, as well as the centerpiece: a river dam over 150 feet tall. Afterwards, take a tour of Whim Greathouse, a restored plantation dating back to the 1700’s.
The deep blue waters off of St. Croix are home to some of the best fishing is the world. The greatest advantage of fishing St. Croix is that you don’t need to travel very far to cash in on some of best species around. Just a few miles off of the Christiansted Harbor you will have access to such migratory fish as: Wahoo, Mahi Mahi (also known as Ono, or Dolphin Fish), Yellow or Black Fin Tuna, Marlin, and even Sail Fish. Also, off the shore of St. Croix is Lang Bank, a deep drop-off of cooler waters and strong ocean currents, which means a wide variety of bait fish, including Billfish, Dolphin Fish, Wahoo and Tuna during the months between June and October. All year long you have excellent chances of catching Kingfish, Mackerel, Bonefish, Tarpon, Amberjack, Grouper, and Snapper. Closer to the island shores, you can try your luck at fly fishing or bottom fishing, with a good chance at landing Snapper, Bone Fish, and the feisty Tarpon.
