Description
Situated on the Timor Sea, Darwin is also a capital city, albeit a much smaller one compared to Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne, with a population of nearly 120,000. Although it is tiny in comparison to the other major regions in Australia, Darwin is by far the largest and most densely populated location in the wide open Northern Territory, also known as Top End.
Since it was named back in 1839 in honor of famed scientist Charles Darwin, the city has grown from a small northern outpost and port town into one of Australia’s most civilized and cultural cities, largely due to its neighboring position to Asia. Thus, it is a unique gateway to Asian countries — East Timor and Indonesia in particular. The city itself is built on a low bluff overlooking the harbour. Like most of the region, Darwin has a pronounced wet and dry season, with the wet season being the recipient of massive rainfall and world famous lightning storms! The drastic weather changes that occur on an annual basis here is one reason the city is so modern: Cyclone Tracy destroyed the city in 1974, making it the second time the area has had to entirely rebuild. The first time was due to horrendous air raids and bombing by the Japanese during World War II. Darwin is built on a low bluff overlooking Darwin harbour, flanked by Frances Bay to the east and Cullen Bay to the west.
The remainder of the city is flat and low-lying, and coastal areas are home to recreational reserves, extensive beaches, and most importantly — excellent fishing! Cape Don is an exclusive, all-inclusive, wilderness destination offering access to some of the Top End’s most unspoiled coastline, which is renowned for its spectacular sport fishing. A diverse range of fishing experiences are on offer from baitcasting in the many creek and estuary systems for the famous Barramundi to bluewater fishing for larger game such as Spanish Mackerel, to fly fishing off white sandy beaches and site casting in the flats for Queenfish and Trevally. This is truly one of the top fishing locations in all of Australia, combining the best of both worlds: abundant species of fish to be caught in a crowd-free setting!
Cape Don is renowned for its diverse range of sports fishing experiences making it a fisherman’s paradise virtually all year round. Accessible from Cape Don are mangrove lined creeks, sandy island cays, fringing reefs and rocky outcrops in deep bluewater, all ideal fishing environments. The Northern Territory’s icon fish, the Barramundi, awaits the challenge of the keen angler.
Whether you are an angler or a fly fisherman, finding an experienced and professional charter outfit is key to fishing some of the liveliest fishing spots in all of Australia. Enjoy!
