JD Richey Sportfishing, established in 1998, provides guided fishing trips in South Lake Tahoe, specializing in light tackle fishing for multiple species. Every trip includes all necessary fishing gear, professional fish cleaning services, and recommendations for local restaurants that will cook the catch. In addition to fishing Lake Tahoe, trips are also offered to Pyramid Lake, home to massive Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, and Alaska’s Togiak River, known for its salmon and trout fishing. Depending on the season, the targeted species include Mackinaw (lake trout), rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and kokanee salmon. Those joining the trip should bring a fishing license, lunch, drinks, appropriate clothing, sunscreen, a camera, and an ice chest to transport fillets home.

Captain JD Richey, a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain and 2024 inductee into the California Outdoor Hall of Fame, runs each trip with a focus on creating an engaging and welcoming atmosphere. His expertise in light tackle fishing ensures a hands-on experience that keeps everyone involved. His trips are well suited for families, groups of friends, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and corporate events. In addition to guiding, JD is an outdoor writer and an active presence on social media, regularly sharing fishing reports and connecting with the angling community.

Trips run for approximately 4.5 hours, with morning trips starting at dawn and afternoon trips beginning at 4 PM. Mackinaw fishing is available year-round, targeting deep-water fish averaging 3 to 5 pounds, though some exceed 20 pounds. Rainbow and brown trout trips focus on hard-fighting fish in shallower waters, with prime seasons in spring and fall. These fish typically weigh 3 to 4 pounds, with larger catches possible. Kokanee salmon fishing is best from July to October when they are most active, averaging 12 to 15 inches long and known for their excellent taste. Cutthroat trout fishing provides a unique chance to catch a native species that was reintroduced to Lake Tahoe, with fish reaching up to 3 pounds.

The fishing is done from a 26-foot River Wild boat designed for comfort and stability. It features a fully enclosed, heated cabin, a spacious rear fishing deck, and high-quality safety and navigational equipment. The boat accommodates up to six people, and all necessary fishing gear is provided. Fish cleaning services are included to make it easy to take home and enjoy the fresh catch.
